Nothing has changed in Haiti; elections remain a weapon in the ruling class’ hands, which only plunges the country into ruin. It’s a farce that doesn’t warrant the electoral alarm raised by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) and its petty-bourgeois cadres, composed of corrupt middle-class intellectuals. They readily accommodate those who break the rules, as well as the government of oligarchs loyal to imperialism, led by the de facto Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.
This entire charade surrounding the budget conflict and the electoral decree, pitting the CEP against the Executive, fooled no one. Its sole purpose was to lull the population into complacency and maintain an agreement between these traitors to the national cause. Thus, the members of the CEP have nothing to lose: they receive guaranteed salaries and allowances as long as the transition continues. Acting like paid agents, meticulously implementing the decisions and instructions they receive, this would hardly bother them if elections were never held.
The question of elections has become paramount, especially after the collapse of the National Conference and the referendum’s cancellation. Significant sums had been spent preparing for this event, and the Fils-Aimé government offered no explanation for the squandering of these funds. To appease public concerns, the CEP announced that elections would be held in August 2026. However, Fils-Aimé rejected this option, as any election would mean a loss of power for him. He hadn’t paid the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) mercenaries to spend only a few months in the Prime Minister’s office.
That is why, when the CPT tried to dismiss him, he was hostile to them. As the CEP progressed, Fils-Aimé sought to curb its momentum. He even attempted to oust some CEP members in order to seize absolute control and delay the process. For Fils-Aimé, the important thing was not so much organizing the elections as remaining in power for as long as possible.
And even if elections were to be held, his inner circle and supporters would have been tasked with ensuring that power did not change hands and remained under their control. It is in this context that the de facto Prime Minister managed to torpedo the August 2026 elections, primarily citing insecurity and an excessive electoral budget.
Finally, tensions eased, and the key players, both within the CEP and the executive, found common ground. The final list of political parties authorized to participate in the electoral process was published by decree on June 2.
A $120 million budget has been allocated, but will the first round of the presidential and legislative elections, scheduled for Aug. 30, 2026, actually take place? That is the dilemma. Neither the CEP nor the de facto government can declare that they will not hold elections this year. That would alienate the entire political class. They therefore prefer to resort to lies, creating the illusion of preparing for elections, when in reality it is a carefully orchestrated disinformation campaign designed to appease political actors who need elections to gain power and perpetuate the same corrupt policies.
These are the same gravediggers of the nation, reinventing themselves with hidden agendas. The electoral process orchestrated by the CEP, involving 316 political parties invited to form platforms is nothing more than a delaying tactic made possible by the complicity of certain local actors within the traditional political class. While the idea remains theoretically conceivable on paper, it proves virtually impossible to implement in reality.
These so-called political parties seek only to align themselves with the projects of the U.S. administration to serve imperial power. None of these parties shares any common interest, much less a national interest. These movements are systematically motivated by individual ambitions aimed at satisfying personal interests. Under these conditions, this regrouping project is doomed to failure. This approach is nothing but an illusion designed to create the impression that the electoral machinery is functioning and that elections will be held soon.
These so-called political parties seek only to align themselves with the projects of the U.S. administration to serve imperial power.
This initiative by the CEP and the government, under the pretext of facilitating the elections, will never achieve this objective. It will only serve the interests of the CEP and the government by reinforcing the bitter fruits of division. It will allow them to extend their mandate and, like insecurity, will constitute a new strategy for maintaining power.
For five years, the opposition to President Jovenel Moïse’s government, which ultimately led to his assassination, has brought nothing concrete to the country except social disorganization. It pursues only the implementation of an imperialist project for Haiti, which is why it lacks any national vision. Its sole objective is to cling to power as long as possible without accomplishing anything. After all, it benefits from imperialist support. It is no coincidence that Jack Christofides, special representative of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in Haiti, set Sep. 30, 2028, as the deadline for achieving the mission’s results. This is a clear message signifying that if elections are to be held, it will undoubtedly be two years from now, in 2028.
This is a well-oiled scheme, carried out with the tacit complicity of the current government and the CEP. The issue of elections in Haiti is a relentless, persistent lie that is constantly invoked. Meanwhile, U.S. imperialism is reinforcing its military presence with international troops and deliberately multiplying its maneuvers of all kinds in order to further dismantle the country’s structures. Imperialism, through the UN, officially proclaims its desire for elections, but in reality, it is uninterested. It is, in fact, content to accelerate the country’s collapse, in accordance with its ongoing Machiavellian plan of harmful destabilization aimed at preventing, by any means necessary, the country’s development and reconstruction, and also at better exploiting us.
In any case, there is another reality that can never be ignored. With such enemies, one can only fight them. The path to change in Haiti cannot be forged without addressing the root of the crisis, without fighting the capitalist system that is eating away at the country and sucking the working masses’ blood. This struggle demands the organization of class warfare against the current government and against neocolonial domination. Only the masses— when they are well-organized, of course — can force this puppet government and its imperialist, murderous patrons to retreat and leave us in peace.
